CONTEXT

Knowledge of the chemical characteristics of the materials used in construction, manufacturing process, the test methodology for determining their properties, their geological origin, their environmental impact, recycling and waste management.

Ability to use the acquired knowledge to pursue the subsequent construction courses, especially Quality Control and Environmental Management.

Ability to select the most suitable material according to the building typology and use. Ability to manage the acceptance and the quality control of materials on the site; also its assembly, the control of the works and the final tests and commissioning.

Knowledge of the specific quality control procedures during the building construction.

TOPICS

Properties of the main building materials: Steel, Binders, Concrete, Ceramic, Stone, Wood, Plastics. Components and systems.

Study of the different materials aims: Transparent Materials, Watertight materials and Vapour Barriers, Materials to control the heat flow, Sustainable Materials, etc.

Learning of material properties by means of assisted and standardized lab test tests.

Production and application process. - Energy and waste. Sustainability of materials.

Technical and constructive process: application methods. Unions and assembly systems. Durability. Selection criteria.

Research on the expressive, constructive and architectural possibilities of the material by producing specimens and models.

 Materials acceptance and testing. Procedures for concrete and steel, applied statistical concepts, treatment of nonconformities.
