COURSE DESCRIPTION

LEARNING RESULTS

-        Ability to devote and adopt not conventional technologies in the processes of design and execution of the structures, building envelope and facilities.

-        Ability to design and draw the constructive solutions not adapted to standardized details.

-        Aptitude to develop their individual´s viewpoint of choice, measured, justification and compatibility of these constructive, structural and facilities systems.

-        Aptitude to determine the most suitable constructive process, as well as an evaluation of cost and period.

-        Resolve passive environmental conditioning, including thermal and acoustic insulation, climatic comfort, energy performance and natural lighting.

CONTEXT

CONTENTS

A. INTEGRATED DESIGN OF THE PROJECT STRUCTURE

- Analysis of the different options from the start.

- Selection of the structural systems, coherence with the architectural design and coordination with the rest of technical systems of the building.

- Preliminary dimensioning and its interaction with the design and the rest of technical systems

- General development of the building structure and the documentation that defines it.

- Structure details and structure model

 

B. INTEGRATED DESIGN OF THE BUILDING ENCLOSURE

- Analysis of the different options from the start.

- Construction integration strategies and criteria in the preliminary design

-

- Enclosure system selection, coherence with the architectural design and coordination with the rest of technical systems.

- Performance calculations. Interaction of the selected system with the design and with the rest of technical systems.

- Joints, Windows and special details design.

- General development of the building enclosure and the documentation and model needed to define it.

 

C. INTEGRATION OF THE DESIGN WITH THE SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS AND THE CTE CODE

- Fire protection: zoning, evacuation, construction design.

- Users security and accessibility: design criteria, construction design.

- Strategies and criteria of energy efficiency in the building installations.

- Selection of the installations systems, coherence with the architectural design and coordination with the rest of technical systems of the building.

- Preliminary dimensioning and its interaction with the design and the rest of technical systems

- General development of the building installations and the documentation that defines it.

As this is more a practical than theoretical course, it’s not about memorizing just theoretically know these topics, but apply them to a particular case and project. The main target of the course is that the students can be capable to technically develop and architectural design until obtain enough technical definition to produce documents valid for the real construction of that design.

For that purpose, some specific topics are gradually introduce (for structures as well as for enclosures) that address the main decisions and problems that an architect faces to technically develop a project.
